Joseph Scafetta JrJoseph Scafetta Jr., Of Counsel to the Firm since 2011, has a B.S. in aerospace engineering, a Juris Doctor in law, a Master’s degree in patent law, and an M.B.A. in the administration of science and technology.

Mr. Scafetta has been registered to practice before the USPTO since December 1973. After serving as a law clerk for a federal trial judge in South Carolina, he entered the private practice of patent and trademark law in January 1975. He has general admission to practice law in the District of Columbia and admission limited to intellectual property law in Virginia.

In January 1976, Mr. Scafetta won the Watson Award from the AIPLA for the best article prepared by an author while a student. Between 1975 and 1980, he published seven more articles on patent law.

During his long career, Mr. Scafetta has handled patent applications on many diverse mechanical and electrical inventions. He has also participated in various litigations before several federal courts, including the U.S. District Courts in the Eastern District of Virginia and the District of Columbia. He has also successfully handled 33 oppositions before the U.S. Trademark Trial & Appeal Board.

Mr. Scafetta is also a member of several lawyer organizations, including the AIPLA, and has had an “a v” rating in the Legal Directory published by Martindale-Hubbell, Inc., since November 1981. Besides English, he is fluent in Italian and reads Spanish, as well as French.
